Recovering well after hand or wrist surgery

Every operation and every person is different, so this is a general guide rather than a set of rules for your case. We will always talk through what to expect for you specifically. But a few things hold true for most hand and wrist recoveries, and knowing them ahead of time takes away a lot of the worry.

The first few days

Most hand and wrist procedures are day cases, so you go home the same day. {{CONFIRM with Holly}} Keep the hand raised, on a cushion or in a sling, more than you think you need to. Elevation is the single best thing you can do to reduce swelling and throbbing in the early days.

Comfort and pain relief

Some discomfort is normal and settles steadily. Simple pain relief is usually enough, taken regularly for the first day or two rather than waiting for pain to build. We will give you clear guidance for your procedure. {{CONFIRM with Holly}}

Looking after the dressing and wound

  • Keep the dressing clean and dry until you are told it can come off or be changed.
  • Try not to get it wet, a clean plastic bag or a waterproof cover helps in the shower.
  • Keep moving the joints you have been told are safe to move, gently and often.
  • A little oozing can be normal early on, but increasing pain, spreading redness, or a fever are reasons to contact us. {{CONFIRM with Holly}}

Getting moving again

Your hand wants to be used, within the limits we set. Gentle movement keeps joints supple and helps healing, while hand therapy guides you on what to do and when. Pushing too hard too soon is the main thing to avoid.

Back to everyday life

When you can drive, return to work, type, lift or play sport depends on the operation and on you. We will give you a realistic timeline and update it as you heal. {{CONFIRM with Holly}} If a question comes up at home, my team is only a phone call away.

The takeaway

Healing is mostly time, elevation and gentle movement, with clear support around you. Follow the plan, be kind to yourself in the early days, and ask whenever you are unsure.
