Context
Context
Reelight (reelight.app) recreates the character of classic 35mm film stocks — Portra, Gold, CineStill, Velvia, Tri-X — on iPhone photos. Two commitments define it: on-device processing (no uploads) and no accounts. It's a product built from the inside of the craft — Ozzy is an award-winning photographer, and Reelight is the photographer's tool he wanted.

Film emulation is everywhere and mostly wrong — arbitrary "vintage" filters that borrow the word "film" without the physics. The real thing has specific color science: how Portra holds skin tones, how CineStill halates around highlights, how Tri-X renders grain. The bar Ozzy set was fidelity, not vibe.
Approach

Each stock is treated as a color-science target rather than a preset — the design question is how faithfully a real-time, on-device pipeline can reproduce a specific emulsion's response, and how to expose that to a photographer without burying them in sliders.

Process
Process & iteration
On-device, real-time image processing (Metal on iOS; GLSL on Android) is a hard performance/quality tradeoff: the same look has to render fast enough to feel live while staying faithful enough to satisfy a photographer's eye. Maintaining filter parity across two native platforms is its own discipline — the same stock must look identical on iPhone and Android.

Solo build; two native rendering stacks (Metal + GLSL) kept in visual sync; a strict privacy stance (no uploads, no accounts) that rules out any cloud processing shortcut; and Android store-compliance work (memory: 16 KB page-size
- edge-to-edge fixes) that came with shipping natively.
